An Irish family has immigrated to the United States and are trying to make their way in New York City. Sarah (Samantha Morton), the mother of the family gets a job at an ice cream parlor, while Johnny (Paddy Considine) struggles to make his way as an actor. There is more than meets the eye though, as the family is still coping with the passing of Frankie, as a result of which Johnny has lost his faith in God. The family's daughters soon meet an enigmatic neighbor Mateo (Djimon Hounsou) who they are first frightened of, but soon get to know well and discover that he is soon to die from AIDS. The story revolves around the family and their relationships and connections with others as they try to make their way 'In America'.
