Neither Hal (Jack Black) nor his best friend is very good looking, but judge everyone based on looks until Hal is given a power by a man with big hands to only see people's inner beauty. From then on, everyone he sees is as attractive as their personality lends them to be, so the physically attractive women with awful personalities end up looking ugly to him, and the ugly women with great personalities look really attracted to him. He finds a woman at a bar one night who he thinks is hot because of this gift of his, but she ends up being a 300 lb. cow. Hal is the only one who sees her as beautiful and gets made fun of for dating a fat chick, and has to deal with whether or not he can deal with her looks even though he loves her personality.
