Comedic film adaptation of the Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name. Nick Charles (William Powell) is a retired detective. He and his wife Nora (Myrna Loy) are settling down to the quiet life. When his friend, the "thin man" Clyde Wynant (Edward Ellis) disappears and is possibly involved in the murder of a woman, Nick returns back to being a detective. Clyde quickly becomes the prime suspect, but his daughter Dorothy (Maureen O'Sullivan) insists he is innocent. Dorothy convinces Nick to take the case much to the chagrin of Nora. Always with a martini in his hand, a quip at the ready, and a smirk on his face, Nick goes off to find clues to the disappearance, with Nora tagging along. As the dead bodies pile up, Nick and Nora manage to piece things together. The murderer is finally revealed at a hilarious dinner-party event, featuring all of the usual suspects.
