In Los Angeles, people’s lives intersect all the time. This movie follows a number of these people as they go about their daily business. When their son is injured in a car wreck, Howard Finnegan (Bruce Davison) and his wife Ann (Andie MacDowell) fail to pick up the birthday cake. This causes baker Andy, (Lyle Lovett) to become very angry over the special ordered cake to remain unclaimed. Another story line follows Lois (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who makes a living having phone sex. This pays well, but her husband wishes she could find another job. There is also feuding couple Ralph (Matthew Modine) and Marian (Julianne Moore), who fight constantly in private but never in public. Over the next few days, how the small things that each of these people do effects the lives of seemingly strangers gives food for thought to all of us about our actions.
